Curriculum
We offer an exciting learning journey which aims to bring out the best in each child. This is achieved by building knowledge and skills through delivering a broad and balanced curriculum. We strongly believe that happy children make successful learners and our aim is for all children to enjoy learning, make progress and achieve. Combined with the values and ethos of our school, through our curriculum we support children to become fully rounded characters. We encourage children to be resilient learners who have a growth mind-set encouraging them to embrace challenge and to not be afraid of making mistakes.
We recognise that some children have additional educational needs and work hard to ensure that all children are given the knowledge and confidence to achieve their best. We are an inclusive school and ensure that all children are catered for. Pupils with Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) receive additional support, as appropriate, to ensure all children make progress. Regular meetings with parents identify progress towards key targets, as overseen by our SENDCO.
We ensure that every area of the Curriculum meets the requirements of the Equality Act 2010 and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014.
Foundation Stage
We offer all Foundation Stage children a wide variety of multi-sensory activities which cater for individual learning styles whilst following the EYFS Framework. Our approach is a balance between indoor and outdoor play, child initiated and teacher led activities such as reading, writing and maths. As well as following specific topics, it is important to address the children’s interests and incorporate them through their play. Our nurturing Foundation Stage staff support the well-being and emotional development of all children to secure happiness and enable learning to take place. The prime areas of learning are Communication and Language, Personal, Social and Emotional Development and Physical Development. The specific areas of learning are Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.
Key Stage 1
Key Stage 1 continue their learning journey following the National Curriculum. We teach the three core subjects which are English, Maths and Science, as well as seven foundation subjects which are Art, Computing, Design and Technology, Geography, History, Music and PE. In addition, the school curriculum also addresses Religious Education, SMSC and P4C.
English is taught following ‘Talk for Writing’ using a range of high quality texts. Phonics and spelling are taught using the TWINKL phonics scheme which also supports reading. Parent information meetings take place to inform parent/carers how we teach phonics, reading and spelling as well as providing a guide of how to help your child at home. We provide a wide range of books for guided reading and home reading, which includes children borrowing books from our library.
‘White Rose Maths’ is used to deliver the maths curriculum. Children are supported to develop critical thinking skills, make mathematical connections and become confident mathematicians. Teachers use a variety of visual, aural and kinaesthetic approaches and resources to develop the concrete-pictorial-abstract approach and use the correct mathematical vocabulary during lessons. This aims to ensure secure foundations and deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
‘Plan Bee’ is being used as a basis for science planning and teaching, which is adapted and enhanced to meet the needs of each class. We believe that science is about encouraging and developing children’s natural wonderment and curiosity in understanding themselves and the world around them.
